Duties and Responsibilities
1.To work closely with all Heads of Department in identifying needs and devises appropriate policies where necessary.
2.Provides consultative services to all hospital departments and individuals as necessary.
3.Serves as an integral member of specialist groups and working parties.
4.Evaluates the quality of Infection Control practice through observation, interview, and record review, to identify the Infection Control educational needs of all levels of medical, nursing and ancillary personnel.
5.Develops and maintains a surveillance system to identify Infection record and complies data on infections, analyses surveillance data to establish baseline occurrence of infections, identify clusters of related infections and implement appropriate preventative measures. Evaluates data and reports back to appropriate personnel.
6.Conducts epidemiological investigations of outbreaks to determine cause, associated risk factor and methods of intervention.
7.Evaluated the quality of Infection Control practices ensuring that up-to-date methods and research is implemented where appropriate.
8.Encourages and assists in the development and trial of new ideas, methods and use of equipment, including the cost-effective use of disposables.
9.Develops and expands knowledge and skills of hospital personnel necessary to prevent transmission of Infection by:
a.Participates in the orientation and induction programs for newly nurses and other hospital staff as required.
b.Assists in training programs for professional and ancillary personnel.
c.Disseminates current epidemiological data related to the hospital’s acute unit and/or as reported in relevant literature.
d.Develops and/or obtains audio visual and printed materials for use in educational programs.
10.Conducts Daily Infection Surveillance activities to collect and record data on the presence of infection among patients and personnel.
11.Investigates and analyses nosocomial infections in conjunction with the Microbiologist and prepares Nosocomial Infection Monthly Report for the Hospital Infection Control Committee.
12.Reviews and updates policies/procedures with the Infection Control Committee.
13.Advises personnel about hospital isolation policies and procedures and ensure that measures are appropriate to improve the care of patients in isolation.
14.Maintains close liaison with Staff Health Clinic in the hospital to ensure that hospital staff are free from infection.
15.Acts as resource person on Infection Control and support for nurses in the clinical areas.
16.Heads of Department on Departmental Policies and Procedures related to Infection Control and Prevention.
17.Conducts inspections of high-risk patients cares areas and environment and food service areas, in conjunction with the Preventive Medicine Physician.
18.Participates in or conducts special projects related to Infection Control.
19.Assumes responsibility for continued professional growth and development by literature review, participation in professional organization, attendance of lectures at local, national and international level and Infection Control Education Program.
20.Prepares reports on investigations with clear action plans where appropriate.
21.Monitors and controls sterilization and disinfection methods.
22.Reviews cleaning procedures and protocols and makes recommendations.
23.Maintains records and regularly evaluates data collected.
24.Monitors environmental hygiene, alerting management to problems and making recommendations.
25.Executive member of Infection Control Committee.
26.Maintains and develop Infection Control Manual and circulates changes/addition as necessary.
27.Participates in CQI & PS activities.
28.Performs other applicable tasks and duties assigned within the realm of his/her knowledge, skills and abilities.
